How to Fix HP Printer won’t recognize ink cartridge?

Is your brand new HP printer is not recognizing the replacement ink cartridge or a new toner ink? This is something that most people experience every now and again, so you are surely not the only one.
hP printer not recognizing the ink cartridge is one of the most common problem customers faces with their printers when replacing an empty cartridge or changing a new one.

This can adversely affect your printer when you are replacing refurbished, remanufactured, third-party, or refilled cartridges and you are looking for an option to fix this issue.
We will explain to you why this happens and how you can resolve it?

There may be a time when you are replacing an empty cartridge or changing a new one, you may receive one of the error messages and your printer is offline & unable to print. Let’s go one by one to fix the problem.

Types of Errors When hp printer not recognizing ink

  • The printer shows “Toner is not compatible”
  • Your printer says” Cartridges are not detected” or the printer cannot detect ink cartridges.
  • A low-level ink or empty ink cartridge error message shows up on the printer and computer screen.
  • Sometimes, you may get an error message like “HP printer cartridge blocked” or “cartridge protection blocked”
  • An error message on the printer saying “no cartridge installed”.
  • There are warning lights flashing on the printer.

Following are the causes of why your printer shows these error messages:
Printer requires internal memory reset: When you reset your printer’s internal memory, it should automatically start recognizing the ink cartridges. Make sure it is detecting full ink level or full cartridges. However, sometimes a printer does not do that when the printer’s internal memory is full and it still thinks there is an old cartridge installed in the printer even though you changed it with the new one

Protective tape or strip:

In case, if you forget to remove the protective covering from the ink cartridges when you first take out the cartridge from its packaging, the printer will surely not be able to detect the newly installed cartridges and this will cause printer errors.

Damaged or dirty metal contacts

The new HP ink cartridges have multiple numbers of metallic contacts that connect to similar metallic contacts in the printer so the printer can send instructions to the cartridges and it will be able to get the ink out of the cartridge and put it on the paper when you are trying to print something.

Dirty or malfunctioned metal contacts can disrupt the communication between the printer and cartridges and the printer won’t be able to read instructions from the cartridges.

Dont touch copper contact metal

HP cartridge protection enabled on the printer

Regular printer firmware is very important for the printer to function properly in the coming years. But, sometimes an upgraded firmware can put a “cartridge protection lock” that blocks the cartridges from printing anything. This feature can be switched off by going to the printer’s control panel and changing the cartridge’s settings.

Incorrect or malfunctioned cartridge installed: In some scenarios, when you buy the ink cartridges from a local store like Amazon, Walmart, etc, the ink cartridges may be faulty or defective. So, your printer won’t be able to recognize these cartridges and it won’t allow you to print any document. Hence, it is always advised to buy the HP genuine ink cartridges from the official HP store.
Ink cartridges installed incorrectly: There may be some chance when you installed the ink cartridge, it was not placed properly to its designated location when you were installing the cartridge, so the printer won’t be able to detect the cartridge and it will give you the error message saying” No ink cartridge found”. All you have to do is to pull the main access door out and check if the cartridges are placed properly or not.

HP 7520 will not recognize 3rd party ink cartridges. This happened in the past but after working with it for an hour, I got it to work, using the same brand of 3rd party ink. This time, I can’t seem to get it to work. I can’t fully remember what I did to make it work in the past. I have gotten all but 1 to be recognized then the next time I take the one not recognized out, the printer shows the others as not being recognized. I feel like I am losing a battle with this ink! I know HP updated their firmware to stop 3rd party inks. Is there a way to get the printer to see that there is ink installed anyway? I will not spend hundreds of dollars on new HP ink.. I might as well buy a new printer.

I bought a new replacement black cartridge for my HP 3630 at Walmart. I have tried the suggestion multiple times with no success. It will not acknowledge the new cartridge.

  3. I bought a new black ink replacement from Walmart. It recognized the old ink as near empty but will not recognize the new cartridge. I will never buy another HP printer again. I desperately need to print out papers. It’s bad enough to have to frequently buy new ink but awful to spend that money only to have to replace the printer.

My case is even worst. I am using original ink that came with the printer. All detected and can be used fine for a few days. One fine day it just refuse to recognise the black ink catridge. Troubleshooting guide asked me to buy a new catridge when I am sure I have just printed merely 20-25 pages and the previous day the printer app shows the ink was still 90% full.

  5. The problem is updated printer firmware. Even old models don’t work with 3rd party ink cartridges anymore (before HP updated firmware they worked well). You have to buy original HP cart.

My printer is not detecting my new ink cartridges. I pulled the new one out and put the empty ones back in. It would not detect the old cartridges as well. What do you think is the problem?

  7. I am unable to use my HP Envy 4524 printer after fitting new none HP cartridges. Even when I replace the old original cartridges the same message comes up, “Incompatible Cartridges”.
    Please help.

My printer was working fine; I’ve had it for some time. But I’ve had this problem before where it will not recognize the new ink cartridge. Here I go installing the drivers and troubleshooting for hours. And this time, I called HP support and followed applicable suggestions.

After everything, it still does not recognize my black ink cartridge. I am so tired of this. It is the HP brand, and I bought it at Target; why should it be defective if it is the same brand? They are expensive, and I don’t want to throw it away and buy a new one, because I’ve exhausted all of my efforts.

  9. I purchased genuine HP 63XL black ink and it will not recognize it. I have bought 3 different cartridges and none will work….NOT HAPPY!!!!!

  10. HP envy 7645 says cartridges not installed properly reinsert. This error will not clear after all these various sequences using new original HP ink cartridges. Help!

  11. I purchased a new genuine HP 304XL cartridge and it was not recognized by the printer. I noticed that the strip with the metal/copper contacts was not exactly in the middle of the cartridge, maybe offset by 0.5mm (0.02″). I attached a small piece of cardboard to the side of the cartridge to get it better aligned with the contacts of the printer. Installing the cartridge with the piece of cardboard was not a problem.

My HP printer now recognizes the genuine HP cartridge !!

(This could be a production error of the cartridges)

  12. Brand new printer with brand new cartridges. Really frustrating. I’ve tried all the above and nothing. Its also saying cartridge carriage stalled, there is nothing obstructing it. I’m fairly techy and I cannot get it to work!
